At the time that Heather and Steve were planning the launch of the company, Heather’s father had his book published about the Gloucester fishing industry, and in particular Heather’s great grandfather Stephen Olsson, who was a Doryman. The book is full of facts about the industry and interesting anecdotes about the man and his four daughters, great grandmothers to Heather. The book vividly portrays these fishermen, their families, and their community. They were people who were committed to their craft, looked after their shipmates, and loved their families. And it revealed the incredible courage of these men. Heather and Steve discussed how there were lessons here as they considered the type of culture they wanted to create for their organization. These core values: doing great work, taking care of each other, and being all about family, became the cornerstone of the culture of the firm.
When considering a name for the company they decided to go to the book. They had already decided they wanted the word “Partners” in the name, envisioning top colleagues would largely be partner-level consultants, and to be seen as true partners by clients. So they started recounting the book which led them to the reference to Hawkins Point, which is a fishing ground on the Grand Banks in the Northern Atlantic. Sadly It was there on March 7, 1935, that Heather’s great grandfather was lost at sea. It was then that they knew the name of our company, and that it would be a reminder to them of the community of professionals they wanted to build.
– Sir Richard Branson
